In short

  1. Lost cat: report them to Le Berger Blanc, the City's animal service, at 450-629-0075.
  2. Check its online list of stray animals every day: bergerblanc.com/animaux-errants-2.
  3. Act fast: an unclaimed cat can be put up for adoption after 5 calendar days.
  4. Found cat: you may only keep them long enough to bring them to Le Berger Blanc, a veterinary clinic or a shelter, so they can be identified.

  1. Search close by first

House, basement, shed, under the balconies, quietly. The details are in our hour-by-hour guide.

  2. Report them to Le Berger Blanc: 450-629-0075

It provides the City's animal services, from its branch at 914 rue Cunard, in Chomedey. For a cat, it asks you to send a poster by email (some conditions apply, see its lost animal page). Open Monday to Friday 9 a.m. to 7 p.m., Saturday and Sunday 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

  3. Check its list every day

Le Berger Blanc posts the animals it takes in at bergerblanc.com/animaux-errants-2. If you recognize your cat, call 514-494-2002, ext. 2, with their identification number.

  4. Think of the City's pilot project

In two areas of Laval, stray cats are trapped to be sterilized (see below). A cat wearing their tag isn't taken to the SPCA. If yours may have been caught, check the "Animaux trouvés errants" album on the official Facebook page of the SPCA Lanaudière Basses-Laurentides, where animals stay 5 days before being offered for adoption, then call it at 450-222-1112.

I've found a cat in Laval

  • You can't keep them: the City's bylaw forbids taking possession of a stray animal, except to bring them to an animal services centre, a veterinary clinic or a shelter, which can identify them.
  • The City's animal service is Le Berger Blanc, at 450-629-0075. The City also answers at 311.
  • They wear a City tag: mention it, it's there precisely to reach their owner quickly.
  • A cat outdoors isn't necessarily lost: how to tell.

Getting your cat back

The City's bylaw asks you to prove the cat is yours (City permit, or an invoice from a vet or a pet store), to show their permit or get one before leaving, and to pay the boarding fees. For a cat 6 months or older, you also need proof of sterilization and their microchip number; otherwise, they're sterilized and microchipped at your expense before being returned to you.

Le Berger Blanc asks for proof of address and documents showing the animal is yours (photos, health record). Boarding fees may apply.

The deadline is short. A cat whose owner is known can be put up for adoption, transferred or euthanized 5 calendar days after the owner is notified. If the owner is unknown, the 5 days start when the cat arrives at the animal services centre.

The rules in Laval

  • Permit and tag required for every cat, within 30 days of adoption or moving in: $10 a year (ages 18 to 64), free at 65 and over. One-, two- or three-year permits; lost tag, $5. Online through Mon dossier, or at the multiservice counter, 1333 boulevard Chomedey, by appointment.
  • Microchip required, unless there's a written medical contraindication, with proof of the number to be provided within 10 days. The City also requires the tag: a microchip can't be seen, and on its own it doesn't keep an animal out of the pound.
  • Sterilization required for cats over 6 months.
  • Fines: $100 to $1,000 for a cat that isn't sterilized or microchipped, at least $300 for a cat that isn't registered.
  • Feeding a stray cat is forbidden, except for authorized colony caretakers. Whoever feeds them becomes responsible for them: sterilization, microchip and registration.

Street cats in Laval

The City runs a trap, sterilize, release and maintain pilot project (CSRM) with the SPCA Lanaudière Basses-Laurentides, for one year, renewable for one more. It only covers two areas: A (postal codes H7P) and B (H7G, H7N, H7S and some H7M). It relies on colony caretakers authorized by the City: 18 and over, on their own property, free of charge, applying by form and by email to the City. The SPCA checks the microchip of every cat trapped and contacts their owner. Released cats have the tip of their left ear slightly cut.
