Lost or found cat in Montreal: who to call

In all 19 boroughs, one number: Proanima, the City's animal service. The island's linked cities, like Westmount or Mount Royal, have their own service.

Updated October 16, 2026

In short

  1. Lost cat in one of the 19 boroughs: call Proanima at 514-379-2525.
  2. Check Proanima's list of found animals every day: proanima.com/perdutrouve.
  3. Found cat with a tag: call 311. Without a tag: Proanima, which reads the microchip.
  4. In Westmount, Mount Royal, Côte-Saint-Luc and the other linked cities, it isn't Proanima: see below.

I've lost my cat in Montreal

  1. Search close by first

House, basement, shed, under the balconies, quietly. The details are in our hour-by-hour guide.

  2. Call Proanima: 514-379-2525

It's the City's animal services centre, and since 2026 its single number for the 19 boroughs. Ask whether your cat has been brought in, or report them missing. Address: 9350 boulevard Pie-IX.

  3. Check the list of found animals

Proanima posts the animals it takes in at proanima.com/perdutrouve. Proanima also suggests checking the lost and found section of the SPCA de Montréal.

  4. Put up a lost cat notice

The City suggests the neighbourhood's public bulletin boards: someone may have taken your cat in.

With Minou

Start an alert, even if you're not at home

A photo from your gallery, their name, and the alert goes out. It can notify neighbours near you who turned on alerts. It's free.

In the latest version of the app, tap this button: on the welcome screen the first time you open it, or in search (the magnifier on the map) if the app is already installed

I've found a cat in Montreal

  • They wear a City tag: call 311 (514-872-0311 from outside Montreal). The City can reach their owner directly.
  • They have no tag: call Proanima at 514-379-2525. Proanima can identify them with their microchip.
  • A cat outdoors isn't necessarily lost: how to tell.

Getting your cat back

At the animal services centre, the City asks for proof that the cat is yours (purchase or vet invoice, invoice or photo of their tag) and payment of the daily boarding fees, plus, depending on the case, sterilization, vaccines or a microchip.

If you cancelled your lost cat's permit, it's reactivated free of charge if they're found within 30 days.

The rules in Montreal

  • Permit required for every cat, whether they go out or not, renewed every year ($13.60 in 2026). You apply to the City, not to Proanima.
  • Microchip and sterilization required for cats over 6 months, unless a vet advises otherwise.
  • The tag: two City pages don't say the same thing for a microchipped cat. When in doubt, have your cat wear it, and check with 311.

The island's linked cities

These are separate municipalities: Proanima doesn't serve them.

  • Westmount: Public Security (Sécurité publique), 514-989-5222, then Contrôle animal Vaudreuil-Soulanges, 450-510-1508.
  • Mount Royal: Public Security (Sécurité publique), 514-734-4666, then Contrôle animal Vaudreuil-Soulanges, 450-510-1508.
  • Côte-Saint-Luc: found cat with a tag, Public Security, 514-485-6960; otherwise, the Côte Saint-Luc Cats Committee.
  • Hampstead and Montréal-Ouest: the SPCA de Montréal takes in their animals, 514-735-2711.
  • For the other linked cities (Beaconsfield, Kirkland, Dorval, Pointe-Claire, Dollard-des-Ormeaux and the others), call your city hall: we haven't checked their service yet.

The 19 boroughs

The same number, Proanima at 514-379-2525, applies to all of them: Ahuntsic-Cartierville, Anjou, Côte-des-Neiges-Notre-Dame-de-Grâce, L'Île-Bizard-Sainte-Geneviève, Lachine, LaSalle, Le Plateau-Mont-Royal, Le Sud-Ouest, Mercier-Hochelaga-Maisonneuve, Montréal-Nord, Outremont, Pierrefonds-Roxboro, Rivière-des-Prairies-Pointe-aux-Trembles, Rosemont-La Petite-Patrie, Saint-Laurent, Saint-Léonard, Verdun, Ville-Marie and Villeray-Saint-Michel-Parc-Extension.

Street cats in Montreal

The City has a program for street cats: trap, sterilize, release and maintain (CSRM). The permit is free for one year, you apply at your borough's Bureau Accès Montréal, then register with Proanima. Since January 1, 2026, the SPCA de Montréal no longer offers this program in the boroughs.
