Search close by, when it's quiet
The SPA points out that a lost cat often hides near home, under a porch, stairs or a car, or shut in a shed. Call them as you walk back toward home, never as you walk away. The details are in our hour-by-hour guide.
Don't give up too soon
According to the SPA, some animals lost for weeks, even months, find their family again.

I've found a cat in Sherbrooke
- The cat has a tag: most of the time they're just out for a stroll. Write down the number and call the SPA de l'Estrie at 819-821-4727, option 3: they can check whether the cat lives in the neighbourhood or is being searched for.
- The cat has no tag: report them at the same number and a file is opened. The SPA can read their microchip if you bring them to the shelter. To drop them off, make an appointment at 819-821-4727, extension 102.
- The SPA only picks up a cat who is shut in: it doesn't go looking for a cat roaming free. You can rent a trap from them.
- Outside opening hours: call the police if the animal is injured or in danger. Otherwise, keep them if you can and call the SPA when it opens.
- The cat is healthy and out of danger: the SPA recommends not feeding them or letting them in for a few days, so they head home. How to tell if a cat is lost.

The rules in Sherbrooke
- A licence is mandatory: the City forbids keeping a cat without an SPA de l'Estrie licence, except on a farm. You get it within 15 days of the animal's arrival; it's valid January 1 to December 31 and renewed every year. The tag stays the same; if it's lost, the SPA replaces it for free.
- The price: check with the SPA de l'Estrie (819-821-4727, option 4), or register your cat online.
- Spaying and neutering: however many cats live in a home, all of them must be sterilized except one.
- No more than four dogs and cats per dwelling, with a permit available to adopt up to ten cats.
- Cats are exempt from the leash and enclosure requirement that applies to other animals.
Alley cats in Sherbrooke
The SPA de l'Estrie describes the community cat: they live mostly outdoors, the neighbourhood knows them and several neighbours look after them. Sometimes they've been sterilized and have a notch in one ear. We didn't find a trap and neuter program for these cats in Sherbrooke.
For keepers with limited financial means, the SPA runs a targeted sterilization clinic at $60, on referral from a partner organization such as Moisson Estrie. It's for cats who have a keeper.
