I've found a cat in Trois-Rivières

  • The by-law is clear: a stray animal must be reported and handed over to the SPA Mauricie immediately, or you may be fined.
  • The cat lets you approach: bring them to the shelter. Otherwise, keep them somewhere closed (a box with holes, a bathroom, a shed) and call 819-376-0806: a patrol officer will come and get them. Dropped off or picked up, it's free for residents.
  • The cat is feral: don't handle them. Rent a trap from the shelter.
  • The cat has a tag or a microchip: the SPA lets the owner know their cat is at the shelter.
  • A cat outside isn't necessarily lost: how to tell.

Getting your cat back

The by-law says you pay the applicable fees and get a licence if the cat doesn't have one. Ask the SPA Mauricie for the amounts.

Don't wait: the shelter keeps a cat wearing a tag or other identification for at least five days, and an unidentified cat for at least one day only.

After the holding period set by the by-law, the cat is examined by a vet, sterilized, ear-marked, then returned where they were caught. You trap the cat yourself, or the SPA comes to pick them up.
